You can prepare for a US TikTok Shop before you open the sign-up form. Choose the seller type that matches who will own the shop. Gather the ID, address, tax and bank details for that person or business. Your choice sets which papers TikTok Shop will ask for. Its February 2026 guide says you cannot change the seller type once you sign up.
If you want to know how to start tiktok shop, clear two gates. First, give TikTok Shop valid details that match your papers and pass its checks. Second, make sure your first item is allowed, your listing is true and you can ship it from a real pickup point. Shop approval does not mean that the item is approved or that buyers want it. Start with one item you can ship well.
The US beginner guide lists four seller types: Individual, Sole Proprietorship, Corporation and Partnership. An individual sells under their own name. A sole owner may use a business that is not a corporation. A corporation is a legal entity of its own. A partnership has two or more owners. Pick the type that fits the seller, not the easiest form. A company must follow the company path; a person's ID list is not enough.
The guide says US applicants must be at least 18 and live in the United States. It accepts a US passport or passport card, a US driver license or state ID, or a permanent resident card as proof of identity. Your phone number and email must be unused by another shop. Check the current registration screen and official help before you submit. Rules can change, but you cannot edit your chosen business type after registration.
What the official US guidance separates
| Gate | Official check | Seller's proof of readiness |
|---|---|---|
| Account registration | Correct business type; valid, matching identity and requested business documents | Registration details match the seller and verification is complete |
| Product listing | Accurate title, category, images, price, attributes and package details; any category approval | The exact item can be submitted without unsupported claims |
| Fulfillment | Working pickup and return addresses and an eligible shipping option | The first order can be packed, labeled and handed off as promised |

For an individual account, TikTok Shop's May guide asks for legal name, date of birth, physical home address, accepted ID details, tax information and bank account information. It says the entered details must match the uploaded documents. The guide also specifies full, clear, unaltered images and a file size below 10 MB for requested uploads. Gather the documents first so you can catch a mismatch before the form does. A shortened name on one record and a legal name on another may slow verification.
For a corporation or partnership, use the business-specific document guide. TikTok Shop may request proof of business, tax forms, address evidence or a letter authorizing the person acting for the company. These requests depend on the business type and the screen you see. Have the legal business name, address and tax number ready, then compare them with the documents you plan to upload. Do not submit a personal form for a company merely because both forms ask for an ID.
The bank detail is part of being able to receive payments, not a marketing choice. Verify that the account information belongs to the seller and matches the current instructions. Do not share ID, tax numbers or bank details with a research tool or a public collaborator. Enter them through the official seller registration flow. If a verification field remains flagged, correct the source mismatch before repeatedly uploading the same image.
Account approval clears only the first gate. You still need a product that fits platform policy, an accurate listing and a way to fulfill orders. If you do not have those, pause before spending on promotion. A shop with no ready offer is an administrative milestone, not evidence that buyers want the item.
Choose one physical item you can describe without guesswork. Confirm the exact model, pack contents and condition. TikTok Shop's US listing guidance calls for a title, description, category, brand, images or video, package dimensions and weight, selling attributes and price. These are not just empty fields to fill. They tell a buyer what will arrive and help the platform apply shipping and category rules. Photograph the actual item or approved product media, then check that every claim matches what you will ship.
Check the category before you write the listing. TikTok Shop bans some products and requires approval for some restricted categories. A suggested category is only a starting point; it does not grant permission to sell. Read the current policy for your exact item. If you need approval, apply in Seller Center. An item may be legal to own or sell elsewhere and still be ineligible for TikTok Shop.
Make the first offer operationally plain. Decide which variant the buyer can order, the stock you truly have, and the price that covers product cost, shipping and returns. If the item comes in several sizes, do not publish a size you cannot pick and pack. Use package measurements from the packed item, not an estimate from a bare product. Incorrect weight or dimensions can affect shipping costs and the delivery promise.
Next, set up the path from an order to a carrier. TikTok Shop's US shipping guide says new sellers get TikTok Shipping by default. If Seller Shipping is open to your account, you need a shipping-fee template before you upload products. Check the options in Seller Center; eligibility varies. Add a valid physical pickup site and a return address. Make sure someone can hand over a parcel there on the schedule you promise.
Do one dry run at your packing table. Put the item and every included part in the box, measure and weigh the sealed package, and estimate the time needed to label it. Check that packaging protects the item and that you know where returns will go. This is a seller readiness exercise, not a claim that a test order has been placed. A great product video cannot make up for a parcel that is late or missing a part.
Use this go/hold map before the first listing. For an account go, choose the right seller type. Match all requested identity, address, tax and payment details to official documents, and pass the required checks. For a product go, confirm the exact item is allowed in its category and has any needed approval. Check the listing facts, real stock, and working pickup and return path. If either gate is still open, fix the missing fact or approval before you run a campaign.
For the next decision, Use Seller Center after account setup
The two gates answer different questions. Registration asks who is selling and whether TikTok Shop can verify them. Listing readiness asks what the customer will buy and whether the seller can deliver it. A pass on one side should never be used as proof of the other. This distinction also gives you a clean next action when progress stalls: fix a document mismatch at gate one, or fix a category, listing or shipping issue at gate two.
Once both gates are clear, submit one accurate listing and watch its status in Seller Center. Learning how to start tiktok shop also means knowing when to pause. TikTok Shop's product-add guide lets you use a single-product flow. Review the details, submit the listing, then check its status in Manage products. If it is rejected, read the reason before you change it. A small cosmetic edit will not make a banned item eligible. For a restricted category, seek the needed approval directly.
After the item is live, check the buyer view. Is the title specific? Do the photos show the product and included parts? Do the options and price agree with the physical stock? Is the delivery promise one you can meet? Ask a teammate to read the page without your explanation and tell you what they expect in the box. Fix a mismatch before driving traffic to the offer.
Only then think about demand. Search interest or a popular video may suggest a product to examine, but it does not confirm that your shop is ready or that the item will sell. Separate a market hypothesis from a compliance and fulfillment decision. If public TikTok product or shop research helps you compare ideas, treat it as a shortlist to investigate. It cannot complete seller verification, get a listing approved or ship a parcel.
Keep a record of what you submitted and what you still need to check: seller type, verification status, first product category, approval status, package measurements, stock and pickup location. When a policy or address changes, return to the relevant gate. This record is more useful than a broad launch checklist because it points to the next blocked step.
If you are still deciding on the channel, decide whether TikTok Shop fits the product before registering. Before the first listing, check product category before the first listing. Once the account and offer are ready, use Seller Center after account setup. The first safe move remains the same: clear the gate that is actually incomplete.
